On July 14, Rockstar shipped the Kortz Center Heist — a multi-stage art gallery robbery in GTA Online, announced on the Rockstar Newswire and now live across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. It is the first proper new heist added to GTA Online since Cayo Perico in December 2020 — a gap of five and a half years (GamesRadar, Game Rant).
The reflexive reading is that this is a send-off: one last score in Los Santos before Leonida opens. That reading gets the sentiment right and the business exactly backwards.
The game after this one has no online mode
Start with the fact that makes the timing interesting. GTA 6 launches November 19 as a single-player experience — Rockstar and Take-Two have been consistent about that framing, and there is no online component at release (Push Square, GTA BOOM). No launch window for a GTA 6 online mode has been announced. Not a date, not a name, not a confirmation that one exists as a product.
History says one is coming: GTA Online followed GTA 5 by about two weeks in 2013, and Red Dead Online entered beta a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. But until it arrives, every dollar of GTA-branded recurrent spending — the revenue line Take-Two reports every quarter, and the one CEO Strauss Zelnick keeps flagging GTA Online's strength in (Notebookcheck) — runs through a thirteen-year-old game.
That is the context in which Rockstar just made its largest content investment in GTA Online since 2020. You do not build a new multi-stage heist, a mansion expansion tier, and a prep-event calendar for a product you intend to switch off in four months. You build it for a product that has to hold an audience through the biggest launch in entertainment history and out the other side.

The other tell is who the update shipped for. Kortz Center runs on PS4 and Xbox One — consoles GTA 6 will never touch, since the new game is PS5 and Series X|S only. Alongside the heist, Rockstar has kept free next-gen upgrades with full progress carryover in place for old-gen players (RockstarINTEL).
That combination describes a strategy, not a farewell. A meaningful slice of GTA Online's paying population still sits on 2013-class hardware. Rockstar is giving that cohort a reason to stay engaged now, a free ladder onto current-gen consoles, and — once they're there — an $80 or $100 question waiting for them in November. The heist is the retention mechanism; the upgrade path is the migration mechanism; GTA 6 is the destination.
It also compounds the consolidation we covered last week: with alt:V dead and RAGE:MP dark by August 31, every form of GTA multiplayer — official or roleplay — now runs on infrastructure Rockstar owns. The Kortz update is Rockstar tending the one garden it has left standing.
What this means for November
The single-player-only launch stops looking like a gap once you see GTA Online as the bridge. Rockstar doesn't need GTA 6 to ship with multiplayer, because it already operates the largest GTA multiplayer service in existence and just refreshed it. The two products can run in parallel for as long as the transition takes: GTA 6 sells the $79.99–$99.99 box, GTA Online keeps the recurrent-spending line warm, and whatever succeeds it arrives when it's ready rather than when the calendar demands.
For players, the practical read is the same one we gave after the SEC filing: plan around November 19, which as of today is 118 days out. Your GTA Online characters, businesses and money are not confirmed to carry anywhere — assume they don't — but the game itself is clearly not going away on launch day.
The unconfirmed pile, labeled
●reported — Multiple outlets describe Kortz Center as likely the last major GTA Online content update before GTA 6 (Game Rant, ScreenRant). Plausible given the calendar; Rockstar has said no such thing, and drip-fed vehicles are already confirmed to continue through the coming months.
●rumor — A GTA 6 online mode arriving as a free post-launch update on the GTA Online model. This is pure pattern-matching from 2013 and 2018. Rockstar has announced nothing — not the model, not the timing, not the name.
If either of those moves from rumor to Newswire, The Causeway will carry it the same day, labeled as what it is.
